Technology and the Environment with Mr. Heffner

On April 30 in the culmination of the Lunch and Learn Technology Series, St. Paul’s Science teacher Timothy Heffner discussed the impact of technology on the environment.  Heffner by highlighting the positive influences of technology, including its prospects in providing clean energy, smart technology, and environmental monitoring.  In the clean energy sector, scientists continue their quest to perfect solar, wind, and tidal powered systems.  Attempting to harness the power of nature in order to fuel our appliances, lighting, and other electrical needs, environmental scientists look to improve energy storage – currently a limiting factor in the practical use of wind and solar. The potential to convert hydrogen to energy could provide easier energy storage and transport.  In terms of smart technology, scientists seek to employ smart grids, which can optimize energy distribution, reduce transmission losses, integrate energy sources, and ensure a reliable energy supply.  The industry may employ artificial intelligence (AI) to determine the most efficient use of energy.  Smart farming, which combines data collected from sensors and drones, would help attain a sustainable agricultural system and conserve energy in that department.  According to Heffner, technology can also assist in pollution reduction.  Hotly debated electric vehicles, which involve their own pros and cons when it comes to the overall health of the environment, as well as carbon capture are both possible ways to reduce pollution.  Finally, electrical monitoring through satellite imagery and climate tracking could supplement the journey toward better environmental health. 

Despite these attractive uses of technology, Heffner also warned of the many unintended consequences of overreliance on technology. He introduced some of the negative consequences on the environment.  E-waste, through the constant disposal of phones and other electronics, builds up in our environment, further adding to the growing landfill problems.  Additionally, mining for rare earth minerals such as lithium – crucial raw materials for the production of electronic devices, wind turbines, and solar panels — leads to environmental degradation.  Digital technology also consumes vast amounts of energy, further draining the world’s resources.  Unfortunately, an overreliance on technology will make reductions increasingly difficult now and in the future. 

Mr. Heffner introduced many often-debated topics during his talk, including the benefits of electric cars, the ethics of AI in climate prediction, and the promise of geoengineering.  He concluded by stating that ecofriendly designs of technology, governmental policy and regulation of the tech sector, and awareness of the consequences of technology on the environment will contribute to creating a brighter future for the environment.  He reminded his audience that it is up to every individual to make mindful decisions regarding the use of technology, its effect on our lives and our planet.
