An admitted student day is an event hosted by colleges and universities for accepted students and their families to explore the campus, meet faculty and staff, and learn more about the school before making their final college decision. These events typically span one or two days and feature a variety of tours and presentations.
Recently, I attended the admitted student day at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and wanted to share my experience. For those unfamiliar, CWRU is located in Cleveland, Ohio, and is widely known for its strong engineering and medical programs.
Customizing the Experience
What set CWRU’s admitted student day apart was how customizable it was. The two-day event allowed students to design their own schedules based on academic interests and potential majors. This made it easy to tailor the experience to personal goals and get a realistic preview of college life.
The event featured presentations, faculty meet-and-greets, panel discussions, and tours—not only of the campus but also of research labs and local highlights. Through these offerings, CWRU showcased its strengths and what makes it stand out from peer institutions. Talking with professors, current students, and other admitted students gave a real sense of community and opportunity.
Focused on Engineering
I chose to build my schedule around engineering presentations and panels. I was particularly impressed with the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. One major highlight was learning about CWRU’s dual major option, which allows students to graduate with degrees in both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering within the traditional four-year timeline.
Another standout was the university’s BS/MS program, which enables students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in just five years—an option that can even be combined with the dual major track. These offerings reflect the school’s commitment to preparing students for advanced careers in engineering and research.
CWRU also boasts impressive senior capstone projects. Past students have designed everything from motorcycle engines to supersonic jets. These hands-on experiences allow students to apply their learning in real-world contexts, adding value to their education and preparing them for the challenges ahead.
Campus Vibes and Cleveland Life
Beyond academics, the surrounding area of Cleveland offers plenty to enjoy on weekends—from museums and parks to restaurants and sporting events. CWRU even provides free transportation and occasional free tickets to local games. (Unfortunately, the Browns are still the Browns—but the experience counts!)
I kept my first day packed with sessions to maximize the academic and campus exposure, then used the second day to explore Cleveland and the university’s neighborhood. Despite the full schedule, everything felt manageable and engaging.
Final Thoughts
If you’re considering a school and have the chance to attend an admitted student day, take it. These programs are incredibly helpful, but only if you make the most of them. The more you invest in the experience, the more you’ll get out of it. CWRU left a lasting impression—and if engineering is your passion, it’s a school worth serious consideration.
