Mason Parker Kaplan is a well-known singer amongst the St. Paul’s community. His voice echoes throughout whatever building he chooses to display his talents in. His hockey skills also don’t go unnoticed, with the precise and skillful moves he demonstrates with the puck at his stick.
However, with his great talents came harsh criticism—often, when opposing fans got the chance, they rained down chants of “overrated.” But Mason never let that get to him. Instead, he used that hate as fuel to lead his team to their second championship in four years, all while leading the league in goals, points, and hat tricks.
When I asked Mason how he handled the noise, he said, “I just tune it out knowing that it’s not true and I’m the best player on the field.” He added that his teammates helped him stay focused and kept his head in the game.
I then asked Mason where he sees himself in the next 10 years. Without hesitation, he answered, “Pro.” That confident answer was where I had to end the interview—it sent chills down my spine.
To close my thoughts on Mason Kaplan: he’s someone who doesn’t need to say much. His actions on the ice speak volumes with two MIAA championships under his belt, striking fear into any defense he faces.
