The nostalgia of OG Fortnite quickly fades, even for longtime players, due to its frustrating gameplay. On December 6, 2024, Fortnite’s original Chapter One map was rereleased for the first time since July 21, 2017. While the initial hype was immense, it quickly diminished as players realized the gameplay flaws that had been overshadowed by nostalgia. Reload, by contrast, offers an improved experience with its exciting and fast-paced gameplay, opportunities for higher kill counts, denser map with abundant loot, and a more achievable path to reaching Unreal—the highest rank in Fortnite.

The map in Reload is designed for 40 players, compared to OG Fortnite’s 100-player-sized map. The smaller map size makes navigation easier and battles more frequent. Additionally, Reload introduces multiple rotation devices, such as shockwaves, launch pads, and crash pads, allowing players to travel greater distances quickly. This creates an action-packed experience that keeps players engaged throughout the game. In contrast, OG Fortnite’s large map often results in long stretches of uneventful wandering, making encounters with other players rare.

Reload also reimagines the respawn system, offering players more chances to stay in the game. When a player dies in Reload, they automatically respawn as long as their teammates survive for a set period. In OG Fortnite, respawning depends on reboot cards, which teammates must retrieve from where you died and then take to a reboot van. This process is not only time-consuming but also far less reliable. Reload’s automatic respawn system leads to higher kill counts and encourages more aggressive, action-filled gameplay, as players are less afraid of dying and more willing to take risks.

Loot availability is another area where Reload outshines OG Fortnite. In OG Fortnite, chest spawn rates range from 50% to 70%, meaning many chest locations may not even contain loot. Reload, on the other hand, guarantees a 100% chest spawn rate. This abundance of weapons and ammunition ensures players can engage in battles sooner and more frequently, rather than wasting time scavenging for gear. The plentiful loot in Reload creates a more climactic and engaging experience, aligning with the game’s ultimate goal of survival and combat.

Finally, Reload offers a more efficient ranked mode for competitive players striving to reach Unreal, the pinnacle of Fortnite’s ranking system. While Fortnite has not disclosed the exact algorithm for ranking up, players generally find that achieving Unreal in Reload requires less time compared to OG Fortnite. As James Niccolini noted, “Achieving Unreal in ranked Reload was much easier than ranking up in ranked OG Fortnite, making me favor Reload rather than OG Fortnite.” For competitive players, the faster progression in Reload makes the grind more satisfying and accessible.

In conclusion, Reload delivers a superior gaming experience compared to OG Fortnite. Its smaller map encourages more action, the respawn system keeps players in the fight, the abundant loot ensures quicker engagements, and the ranked mode provides a more achievable path to Unreal. While OG Fortnite’s rerelease initially drew attention due to nostalgia, Reload’s innovations highlight the flaws of its predecessor and solidify its position as the better game mode.
