Bryce Matthews is a 6’3″ senior guard from St. Paul’s in Towson, Maryland, whose relentless dribble moves and impressive shooting abilities draw comparisons to none other than Wardell Stephen Curry II. While such high praise might seem lofty for a high school athlete, watching Bryce play makes it clear he’s earned it. His shooting is so precise it’s like the ball has a built-in GPS, and his repertoire of moves rivals that of a chess grandmaster.
But don’t just take my word for it—when I interviewed Bryce recently, he shared his mindset:
“When I am playing, my mindset is it’s me versus me, and there is no one out there that can stop me from going off in a game besides myself.”
Despite his confidence, Bryce is quick to credit his teammates, acknowledging their role in helping him be the impactful player he is every time he steps on the court. His coach Phillip Hahn echoed this sentiment, describing Bryce’s work ethic and leadership.
“Bryce is a quiet kid who doesn’t say much; he just comes in and works every day. He lets his play do all the talking and leaves all those other distractions out of the way. But just because he’s quiet doesn’t mean he doesn’t lead—he calls out plays and gets his teammates in the right spots. He’s truly a special player and will leave a legacy that lasts for years to come.”
Bryce’s performance backs up the hype. In a recent game against Friends, he put up an impressive stat line: 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals—exceeding his season averages of 10.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. His growth this season has been remarkable, making last year’s stats (8.1 points, 3.2 assists, 2.1 rebounds, and 1 steal per game) look like just a warm-up.
As Bryce continues to improve with each game, college scouts are taking notice. He’s already being courted by schools like Randolph-Macon University, Goucher College, and Stevenson University, with many more programs keeping a close eye as the season progresses. With the end of the season approaching, Bryce Matthews is proving he’s a player worth watching, and his future in basketball looks brighter than ever.
