The 2024 Heisman Trophy race brought a fierce debate between two exceptional athletes: Travis Hunter from Colorado and Ashton Jeanty from Boise State University. Both had historic seasons, dominating their respective positions, but only one could take home the prestigious award. Let’s break down their cases.
Travis Hunter
Travis Hunter, a standout two-way player for Colorado, had a season to remember. Playing as both a receiver and cornerback, Hunter demonstrated unparalleled versatility and skill. Here are the highlights of his incredible season:
- Offense: 96 receptions, 1,258 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns.
- Defense: 4 interceptions and allowed just 1 receiving touchdown all season.
- Historical Impact: First FBS player with 150 receiving yards and 4 pass breakups in the same game.
- Awards: Best Receiver in the league and Best Defensive Player.
- Unique Feat: Only player in history to win Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards in the same season.

Hunter’s ability to dominate on both sides of the ball made him a nightmare for opponents. On defense, quarterbacks avoided throwing to his side of the field, and on offense, he ranked in the top five for nearly every receiving category. Additionally, his workload was astounding—playing over 150 snaps per game.
Ashton Jeanty

Ashton Jeanty, a running back from Boise State University, delivered a record-breaking season, leaving many fans puzzled when he didn’t win the Heisman. His stats were nothing short of remarkable:
- Rushing: 374 carries for 2,601 yards (1st in the NCAA, 2nd all-time) and 29 touchdowns (2nd in the NCAA).
- Efficiency: Averaged 7.0 yards per carry (11th in the NCAA).
- Standout Performances:
- 192 yards and 3 touchdowns against undefeated Oregon.
- 267 yards and 6 touchdowns against GASO in the season opener.
- 259 yards and 4 touchdowns against WSU.
Jeanty’s achievements outshone previous Heisman-winning running backs like Derrick Henry, Mark Ingram, and Reggie Bush. Remarkably, he led Boise State to the playoffs, often carrying the team single-handedly, even against top-tier competition.
The Debate
While both athletes had incredible seasons, the debate over who should have won the Heisman comes down to perspective. Travis Hunter’s ability to excel in two positions is historic and unmatched, making him a rare talent. On the other hand, Ashton Jeanty’s statistical dominance and crucial role in Boise State’s success are undeniable, as evidenced by his overwhelming fan support in the Heisman vote.
Both players have solidified their place in college football history, but many will continue to argue that Ashton Jeanty was the rightful winner of the 2024 Heisman Trophy.
