The Singers class of 2024 has already surpassed all expectations set by previous years, leaving both students and faculty in awe. With their upcoming spring concert on the horizon, the group is poised to solidify its legacy. Jasper Genz enthusiastically declares, “The Singers class sounds like angels!”

The Winter Concert

This year’s Singers class made its debut during the Winter Concert at Old St. Paul’s Church. They performed a set of four songs and collaborated with the Concert Choir and the girls’ school choir for a combined finale.

Since September, the students had been hard at work, memorizing their pieces under the expert guidance of Mr. Rifkin. Their setlist included festive hits such as Mr. Grinch, A La Nanita Nana, and We Three Kings. They even added a touch of humor to their final piece, Holly Jolly, by incorporating kazoos. The result? A performance that was both masterful and entertaining.

Student Perspectives

The students’ enthusiasm for the Singers class is palpable.

Erik Xu, who delivered a standout solo in Mr. Grinch, described the class as “really awesome.” He added, “Mr. Rifkin is really positive and a great director.”

Rashad Jones, another member of the group, shared his appreciation for the baritone section and how the class fosters a collaborative learning environment. “It’s been a good experience,” he said, praising both the camaraderie and the songs they perform.

What’s Coming Next?

The Singers class is gearing up for their next big performance on February 2nd at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. As part of St. Paul’s Episcopal tradition, the choir has been invited to participate in this annual concert alongside other schools.

Looking further ahead, the Singers will cap off the year with their spring concert in May. Preparations are already underway, with the students diligently learning new songs for the Cathedral event, which is just weeks away.

Mr. Rifkin: The Best Director

The heart of the Singers’ success lies in the leadership of their renowned director, Mr. Rifkin. Known for his innovative teaching methods and unwavering positivity, Mr. Rifkin has transformed the class into a musical powerhouse.

“Day after day, Mr. Rifkin delivers astounding lessons and revolutionary techniques that help even the most inexperienced singers master their melodies,” said one student.

Reflecting on the Winter Concert, Mr. Rifkin called it the “best performance the Singers group has had since I’ve been here.” He noted that “the class is more positive than it’s ever been.”

Though Mr. Rifkin will not be returning next year, his impact is undeniable. He believes that many of the younger students in the class will continue pursuing music throughout their time at St. Paul’s, ensuring that his legacy lives on.
