Dear Readers,

Welcome to The Voice, the newspaper of The St. Paul’s Schools, written by students for students. Formerly The Page and The Epistle, we are proud to meld together St. Paul’s School for Boys and St. Paul’s School for Girls across both the Upper School and Middle School campuses, telling the stories that are important to us all in the best way we can, accurately, fair-mindedly, and sincerely curious.

This year is my first as Editor-in-Chief. I began as a staff writer in the academic year 2022 to 2023, then had my experience as a peer reviewer and assistant editor while in the academic year 2023 to 2024. The importance of my earlier experiences is that quality journalism begins with the ability to listen; also, the quality of writing must be based on structure and sources. My aim this year is simple: to help more students to do their best work and to see that everything we write shall be something that our readers can depend upon and enjoy.

What to Expect

  • An ever-changing mixture of campus topics, features, arts, culture, sports, profiles, and opinion.
  • A regular three-week pitch to publication period, so that there shall be a constant flow of stories that are timely.
  • Adherence to the AP style, but with a brief St. Paul’s style sheet on names, titles, and teams.
  • Careful, respectful interviews, frank and reliable sources, and impeccable fact-checking.
  • A public, precise, and well-understood system of corrections: if we have done anything in error, we will make a rapid correction on the web of whatever publication has been made, and characterize such correction at the heading of the story.

How to Get Involved

  • Do you possess a story idea? Write a brief pitch stating the sort of angle that you have and the names of two sources for research, using the “Pitch a Story” on this site.
  • Do you prefer visuals? We wish to carry out our desire to work through photographers and designers, as our issues will need.
  • Students in the Middle School are welcome as writers: we shall make a practice of supplying new writers with an Upper School mentor, if such is needed.

Goals for 2024 to 2025

  • To increase the number of total contributors, and to add more press from the Middle School.
  • To shorten the turnaround from pitch to publication.
  • To publish regularly and improve through the use of simple clarity in our headings and captions.

We thank you for your attention in reading and supporting student journalism at The St. Paul’s Schools. We are excited to win your attention, story by story.

Yours sincerely,

Torben Heinbockel ’26
